Encouraging A Healthy Self-Image
Beauty is more than the face that stares back at you in the mirror. Beauty is your spirit and gifts reflected.
About
My relationship with mirrors has been complicated. When I was in middle school, I would avoid them. I had horrible acne and looking at myself in the mirror was painful. When I couldn’t avoid a mirror, I would use other tactics to get around my reflection like squinting my eyes to blur my view.
It seems silly now, but it was a difficult time for me. I was insecure and felt alone and depressed. I didn’t like my reflection, so I didn’t like me.
It took me a long time to understand that I was more than the image in the mirror. Aya was fun and smart and a great friend. My acne didn’t change those things. I had to learn to appreciate my whole reflection. I had to learn, to “see me.”
I started the I See Me Campaign because I know that many young girls- especially teens- look in the mirror and feel the way I did. That's why I am donating ten percent of all proceeds from The Aya Jené Collection towards charities that promote healthy self-images in girls.
If you can relate to my story, I want to encourage you to look beyond the image in the mirror and see your reflection from the inside out so that you can begin to appreciate everything that makes you, uniquely you. Make sure you register for my next iSeeMe.Love "Sister 2 Sister" event!
Love,
Aya Jené
